The Butterfly and the Cat

By Poet Majed Al-Rawi (From his collection: Enchanting Phantoms)

With wings painted in the hues of dawn,

Traced with threads of dusk and twilight's glow,

She fluttered in a robe of radiant grace,

Like an angel's mantle, soft and slow.

The cat pursued her as she fluttered by,

Like a beating heart in a moment of dread.

His cunning claws struck fierce and swift,

To rob her of the hope she bred.

Time and again she eluded his grasp,

Yet still he closed the bounds between.

She thought: "I am weary, no escape is left,

Save the clever path of a cunning scheme."

She fled and sheltered behind the glass,

Watching his moves with anxious eyes.

When he saw her shadow just beyond,

Unaware of the glass in his blind surprise,

He leapt and struck with all his might,

Only for doom to strike him down.

His claws were shattered against the glass,

His grip crippled, his power flown.

He began to mew with a sorrowful cry—

How often the wicked reap what they sow!

While the butterfly flew to the distant fields,

To bestow her kisses where blossoms grow.

Her tale remains for the weak and frail,

A timeless parable wherever they go.
